Recreational vehicle manufacturers are increasingly turning to composite sandwich panels for walls, roofs and floors of caravans, motorhomes, slide-on campers and fifth wheelers. This enables reductions in production costs and greater design flexibility. Sandwich panels, which consist of two facings and a rigid lightweight core, act as structural elements in the vehicle. They are designed to support a variety of loads and be resistant to moisture, meaning that the quality and type of materials used to manufacture them is crucial to the overall performance of the vehicle.
Sandwich panels get their name from the use of layers (hence the term “sandwich”). The use of these panels allows manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight while retaining high mechanical strength, thermal efficiency and load-bearing structural properties. This enables greater fuel efficiency, thereby reducing operating costs.
With the right core materials, sandwich panels also offer outstanding thermal efficiency. This combination of lightweight construction and high performance insulation makes sandwich panels an ideal choice for constructing truck bodies and semi-trailers.
WHAT IS A COMPOSITE SANDWICH PANEL?
Sandwich panels get their name from their layered construction, consisting of two stiffer faces with a light foam material between. The use of these panels reduces production costs and offers greater design flexibility for vehicle manufacturers. They are unique in that they are lightweight while offering high mechanical strength and load-bearing structural properties.
The core usually consists of a lightweight plastic foam, which provides the insulation. Composite sandwich panels utilise special materials with key features such as low weight, high stiffness and high strength. This design has enormous mechanical advantages.
KEY COMPONENTS OF A COMPOSITE SANDWICH PANEL
Sandwich panels consist of two facings and a core, which are bonded together by a polyurethane adhesive. Sometimes other intermediate layers and reinforcements are included depending on the required panel specification. Generally, these panels are fabricated by attaching two thin, strong, and stiff skins with a thick, lightweight core between them.
Like an edible sandwich, a sandwich panel can be made from a wide variety of fillings and materials. The core usually consists of a lightweight plastic foam which provides the insulation properties while the face sheets are made from fibreglass sheets.

JACKODUR® FT
JACKODUR® FT boards are manufactured using a precise, planing process. Following the manufacturing process, the board surface is milled in order to create a flat surface, which is a high priority when laminating composite sandwich panels. The thickness tolerance of JACKODUR® FT is +/- 0.15 mm.
JACKODUR® FTR
JACKODUR® FTR boards are manufactured using a precise, planing and grooving process. Following the manufacturing process, the board surface is planed and grooved. The grooves are spaced 40 mm apart on both sides of the board and have an optimised depth and breadth of 2 mm. The planing process creates a flat surface, while the grooves allow adhesive to be spread evenly and prevent entrapped air from forming during production of composite sandwich panels. Groove depths can be customised on request. The thickness tolerance of FTR is +/- 0.15 mm.
JACKODUR® FTS
The embossed surface provides increased shear strength. The embossing also ensures that the end product has an even surface.
